David,
I have to introduce you to my readers (both of them). David and I go back about 25 years or so when we were part of the same church in Boone, NC. My memories of David were of a great encourager and friend. At one time, we worked together on a tree planting crew, which was quite an experience. We got paid 4 cents a tree to plant Loblolly Pines and 5 cents a tree to plant White Pines.

One morning the boss dropped several of us off at a site to plant it while he took the others to another site. We finished up early and fortunately had our lunches with us. After eating lunch, David and I started playing a game of Battleship. The odd thing was that we didn't have any game boards or pieces. We just agreed to the parameters and played it in our minds. If I remember correctly, we used a 10 x 10 grid A-J and 1-10 and hid one ship that was 3 coordinates long. The trick was to remember where your ship was and also to remember where you had shot on the other guy's "board".

We continued to play it after that day on the way to and from planting sites. We started hiding more ships and may have even made the board bigger. I'm not sure. I do remember riding on the back of a pickup truck in the middle of the night somewhere near Winston-Salem shouting out coordinates as loudly as we could.

David's comment about X-47 was because we have been "playing" on email lately except neither of us is really trying. I challenged his shot at X-47 saying that it was off the board. That was his response.
What great memories! I'm glad we are reconnecting.
